History of Canadian Dollar

As per OANDA, In the 1950-1960s, Canada introduced a floating currency. This move was in response to the 1957 recession and was done in an effort to maintain economic stability.

A fixed exchange rate is what occurred in 1962, when the Canadian Dollar was pegged to the US Dollar at $0.925 CAD = $1 USD. The Canadian dollar went from being pegged to the US dollar to floating in 1970.

It had previously been a peg until then. A peg was put in place to keep the Canadian dollar from being devalued by external market forces. This led to an overvalued currency.
